Revenge of the Hockey Nerds

One of the great things about hockey is all of the stats categories. We love checking out the lesser-known stats and looking at how certain players are doing in specific areas of the game.

Here are some interesting stats from the NHL so far this season:

2.13                 That is Corey Crawford's goal against average. The 26 year old is proving
that he can be a number one goalie in the league. Marty Turco's 3.08 GAA has him in the running for the Vesa Toskala Trophy this year.

4                       4 shorthanded goals for Frans Nielsen - who is tied for the league lead with Brad Marchand. In the NHLPA and CBC Players poll, Nielsen finshed 2nd to Loui Eriksson as the league's most underrated player.

8                       Rookie Logan Couture leads the league in game winning goals with 8. Did you know that Couture was born in Guelph, Ontario and had a NHL-future omen at birth: the delivery-room nurse Bernadette Devorski is the mother of NHL referee Paul & NHL linesman Greg Devorski.

-19                   Simon Gagne is a minus 19 on the year. The most shocking part of this stat, is that he plays on one of the top teams in the East and is known for being a solid 2-way player.

168/175         The Carolina Hurricanes have scored 168 goals, but have let in 175 against. Yet they are sitting in the 8th playoff spot in the east. What does the mean? They win close games, but when they lose - it's by a lot.

4                       I always make fun of Alexander Ovechkin for this stat, but 4 is the number of Empty Net goals this year by Milan Lucic and Brandon Dubinsky to lead the league. I know you are wondering how many Ovechkin has, so I will save you the trouble of looking it up. He has 3 so far this year.

27.3                 27.3 is Darryl Boyce's shooting percentage this season. He has the highest out of players that have played at least 20 games this year. He has 3 goals on 15 shots - with half a nose no less! If you ask me he needs to start shooting more. Steve Stamkos is a stud with a 20.3 shooting percentage on the year.

6                       Sean Avery leads the league with 6 misconduct penalties this season. Let's hope he gets to his goal of 10.

250                  Cal Clutterbuck has a nice 30 hit lead over Tuomo Ruutu for this year's hits leaders. Clutterbuck hits everything that moves and has dished out 250 hits so far this year.

1                       In 33 games this year Kristian Huselius has just 1 registered hit. Now that is some soft ice cream.

71                     Not a big shock here if you watch any Toronto Maple Leafs games. 71 is the number of giveaways (as of 2/15/11) Francois Beauchemin and Luke Schenn each have this season to lead the league in that category. Tomas Kaberle sits 8th in giveaways with 57 of them.

  4. I am not shocked at all that 2 leafs lead the league in giveaways.
But surprised it would be Schenn. He has been the best D so far in my mind.

  6. I haven't seen many Wild games this year - if any. I remember Clutterbuck making some "dirty" or questionable hits when he was a rookie... how many of these 250 are of that calibre?

  7. Brad Marchand is also having a great year. I can remember watching him in jr and he was a stud back then.
