|Like the playoff race, the Leafs work the outside|
The Maple Leafs are currently ranked 24th in powerplay percentage with 15.9%. This is where it gets sad, as the Leafs have the 3rd most powerplay opportunities in the league with 290. From these 290 powerplay chances, the Leafs have 46 goals. That's a lot of missed opportunities and considering how close the Leafs are to being in a playoff position, they could have been the difference.
Powerplays are coachable, and their success and failure has to reflected on the coach. If those on the powerplay are not willing to get some bruises in front of the net from a cross-checking defenceman or a Dion Phaneuf slapshot, then they should be replaced with guys that are willing to get dirty in front of the net like Mike Brown. Having 5 guys just pass it around the perimeter all wanting to take a low percentage shot with nobody in front of the net providing a screen has to fall on the coaches. How Ron Wilson puts the same powerplay units out to do the same thing over and over again is just mindblowing - possibly even more so than having a 3rd line center on the point.
