Flashback Friday - The Messier Guarantee

With the Stanley Cup Playoffs in full swing, we are going to flashback on some of the greatest playoff memories. The Playoffs are great for creating those special moments where a goal, a pass or dangle become frozen in time and a recurring memory for hockey fans to look back on
The New York Rangers were down 3- 2 during the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. Their rivals the New Jersey Devils were just one game away from reaching the Stanley Cup finals when Mark Messier - the captain of the Rangers - told the New York media that he guaranteed a Game 6 victory. The guarantee was a headline in all the papers and became a huge story not just in New York, but all over the hockey world. It was compared to Babe Ruth pointing and calling his homerun or Joe Namath's Superbowl win guarantee.

Messier backed up his guarantee by scoring a natural hat trick in the 3rd period and pushing the series to a 7th game. The Rangers would end up winning game 7 in double overtime and advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vancouver Canucks.

I can remember wanting the Canucks to win, because I was a huge Pavel Bure fan, but the Rangers would go on to win the Stanley Cup thanks to a game winning goal in the 7th game by mister guarantee himself, Mark Messier. The win would give the Rangers their first Stanley Cup win in 54 years and cement Mark Messier as one of the greatest leaders in NHL history.

  1. I curse Stephane Matteau to this day.....Would have been interesting to see the outcome if it was the Canucks and Devils in that 94 final. The Canucks could have very well won their first cup that season.

  4. I can remember thinking what a prick to say that. But the fact he scored a hat trick and backed it up was pretty bad ass.

  8. Sorry to ruin the Messier tribute here, but if you watch replays, that game seven, game winning goal was actually scored by Brian Noonan. Messier never touched the puck.
