Wax Stain Wednesday: Prospecting

Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
Sometimes you hit gold, sometimes you hit Daigle.
Well the mail hasn’t been interesting since Sakic arrived and with another Wednesday upon us, I thought I would share a new plan I have. If I made a list of what was missing from my collection, the list would seem endless. Even with over 200 autographs and growing, I can always think of more I would like to own. Sidney Crosby is one example, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are others. Sure, if I got the chance to meet any of these legends I am sure they would be kind and give me a scribble, but fact of the matter is they don’t seem to hang out in the same circles I travel in. I could send a TTM request, but Mario and Sidney both don’t sign TTM, and really with hundreds and hundreds of letters a day, I am sure they couldn’t realistically get to them all anyway. If only, I had been writing letters when Crosby was a slightly less popular junior player!

Prospecting is something some collectors and fans do. Buying rookie cards low and hoping they rise in value or getting an autograph of a player before he makes it big so you can say you were a fan all along, it happens all the time. I live on the East Coast and the closest Junior team I have is the Halifax Mooseheads, so I pay attention to their prospects and go in and watch the occasional game. SO, why not take advantage of getting an autograph from a player who COULD be something special someday. I have a soft spot for many of Moosehead stars that go onto the big show and I cheer for them no matter what team picks them up. Sometimes they are a success, like Jacob Voracek or Alex Tanguay and other times they turn out to be flops like Petr Vrana. Most Major Junior hockey teams produce team cards and

I bought a box of ITG Heroes and Prospects last season and had some pretty good success. In the box, I pulled two autographs and three memorabilia cards. In addition, I almost had the complete set of base cards. The cost was about 90 bucks for all that I pulled; I felt it was a good deal. But, buying the product does give you two ways to land autos of future stars.

First here are the cards that were already autographed
In the Game specializes in CHL and AHL hockey cards these are two ways which you can get a card of your favourite prospect autographed and if all else fails you can try and make your own card of them.
Brendan Gaunce has talent and has the size to go with it (6’2” and 205 lbs) at just 17 years old. He was the 2nd overall selection in the OHL draft in 2010 and could certainly be a first rounder in this coming NHL entry draft. Bob McKenzie gave him an honourable mention in his draft preview just recently of the Top 10 prospects in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Like Carolina, I have been waiting for Zach Boychuk to crack the lineup and do big things. Fact is, Carolina is quickly amassing some great young talent and it could mean that Zach who has done really well in the AHL could be the odd man out in Carolina. As a prospecting collector, him getting traded to a team that is less stacked would be great, or if Zach could make it to the second line on Carolina, then the results might not be far behind.

Even the cards that I pulled from the base set could be great TTM request cards. Can you imagine this beauty with an autograph?I think Linus Omark's auto would look really nice on this card.
So this coming season, I hope to buy a few extra packs or an extra box and use some of the doubles I get to make requests to upcoming talents like Nail Yakupov, Griffin Reinhart and Mathew Dumba. So here is hoping you see some returns of some young kids you may or may not have heard of and I can say in 10 years:

“Wow, I got an autograph of that guy when he was in junior”.

Here is hoping anyway.

I remember when I first started collecting cards I thought Pat Falloon was going to be the next big thing. I have 5 of his rookies that are worth nothing.
