Scariest Performances In The NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs visit the famous Nightmares Fear Factory
It would be too easy to simply have a Halloween post about the scariest looking players in the NHL (a.k.a. a Zdeno Chara tribute), so we'll go a different route. Here are some performances by players and teams this season that you have to be scared about, as a hockey fan and a fantasy owner.

What Other 18-Year-Old's Are Doing With Their Lives

"Yeah, I can vote."
With the news of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Gabriel Landeskog, Sean Couturier and Adam Larsson staying with their NHL clubs for the year, many people looked at the 18-year-old's and reflected on their own lives. I know I feel like a failure every time one of these kids cracks the line-up or they become my heroes during the IIHF World Juniors, but what about their peers? I can remember being that age and thinking, Sidney Crosby just put up 100+ points in the NHL and I'm shoulder-tapping guys in The Beer Store parking lot to buy me beer so I can drink in a basement.

What's Kyle Turris Up To These Days?

Kyle Turris is just 22 years old, but already wants out of the desert and far away from the Phoenix Coyotes. Turris was drafted 3rd overall by the Coyotes in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, right behind Patrick Kane and James Van Riemsdyk, who have already signed contract extension coming off their entry level deals.

Prospect Watch: Nathan MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon turned 16 on September 1st, so he is still a young prospect, but many scouts already have him pegged to be the top draft choice in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. For years he has been compared to Sidney Crosby and you can see their similarities on and off the ice.

The Art Of Fantasy Hockey Swindling

I have been doing hockey pools for many years and would consider myself a fantasy hockey veteran. If fantasy hockey was a real job and I was a suit working downtown, I like to picture myself with a spacious corner office and a nice view of the city.

Dougie Hamilton: The Forgotten Piece of the Kessel Trade

When we look back at the trade that took place on September 18th in 2009, we often just look at how Phil Kessel is doing compared to Tyler Seguin.

Jason Spezza Watches Seinfeld

Jason Spezza is just a normal guy who likes to watch TV on his days off or while riding the exercise bike after hockey games. However, Jason really likes comedies and that's when it comes out...his laugh. Just listen to him watch this classic Seinfeld episode:

Will The Real Alexander Ovechkin Please Stand Up

It's early in the season, very early, so I don't want to be getting on a guy right away. But for the 1st time in a long time I had the #1 pick in a fantasy draft and I went with Mr. Ovechkin. This is a league that has shots, PIMs, powerplay goals as stat categories along with the usual goals, assists, points and plus minus. So my thinking was that Ovechkin would bounce back and give me close to 400 shots, 80ish PIMs and lead the league in goals.

The Late Night Jaromir Jagr Hockey School

It was recently revealed by Yahoo!'s Nicholas J. Cotsonika that Jaromir Jagr has his own key to the Philadelphia Flyers practice facility. Jagr asked for it and goes for late night skates to work out and sharpen his skills - he calls it the Jagr Hockey School. The story is that Jagr does some extra work that he can't do during group skates or after practice when he's too tired, but that can't be all. What really goes on at the late night Jagr Hockey School?

Wax Stain Rookie: Captain Serious, Jonathan Toews

Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
Well after a week of nothing, the streak is over just as quickly with a good return. If I think about all the young players in the NHL, I don’t think there is a player who is a more complete package than Jonathan Toews. When the game is on the line, I really couldn’t think of a centre I would want on the ice more than Toews. Crosby is an amazing player and certainly one of the best in the NHL, but Toews has the intangibles that I think are certainly of the “once in a decade” variety.

Prospect Watch: Nail Yakupov

First off, having the first name Nail makes you pretty bad ass. Unfortunately for Yakupov though he is not as feared by the video game makers at EA Sports as they made him only 5"1 in NHL 12. He is currently listed on most sites at 5"10 or 5"11. I'm sure they'll fix this as Yakupov is an elite prospect that should be the top choice in next year's NHL Entry Draft.

5 Tips To Fantasy Hockey Success

You may not draft the best team. You may not dress the right players. But there are many ways to make sure you don't finish dead last in your hockey pool. This has never happened to me before, but from experiences it usually results in the last place finisher being relentlessly chirped and sometimes not being invited back next year. Here are five simple tips to make sure you don't suck this fantasy hockey season:

Caps/Pens Rivalry Is Wide Awake

One of the great rivalries in hockey today is officially back on with the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins renewing hostilities on Thursday night. We thought this rivalry had died a little with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the shelf for a majority of last season, but Aaron Asham stirred the pot once again. With his post-fight antics after he left a bloody Jay Beagle on the ice, he let it be known the Caps/Pens rivalry was very awake.

Dion Phaneuf Hit Causes Chaos

Last Saturday night, Dion Phaneuf delivered a massive open ice hit - despite Don Cherry's claims that players would be afraid to do so - and sent shockwaves across the world.

Will Wade Redden Make It To 1000 Games?

Another hockey season is starting up and 34 year old Wade Redden gets ready to play his 2nd season in the AHL with the Connecticut Whale. It's still hard to believe that just 5 years ago the Senators decided to ink Redden to a 2 year contract and let Zdeno Chara walk and sign with the Boston Bruins. We know how that signing worked out for Chara and the Bruins.

Toronto Maple Leafs Overnight Camp

The Leafs have played 2 games and for some odd scheduling reason had the week off to practice and play around with some guns. The Leafs practiced this week at an air base rink at CFB Trenton which is around 2 1/2 hours east of Toronto.

Talking NHL Realignment

The NHL Realignment talks are heating up with proposals being tossed around by everyone who owns a keyboard (or crayons). Last night Bob McKenzie tweeted that the Detroit Red Wings could be moving to the Southeast Division so the Winnipeg Jets could take their spot in the Central Division. Then today, he covered just about every scenario in a lengthy blog post. If you're already sick of "what the best plan is" talk, it's only just beginning.

What Should We Expect From Ryan Smyth?

The Mullet returns to Edmonton
So Captain Canada is back playing for the only team he truly ever loved. Ryan Smyth who turns 36 in February might have more grey hair in his flowing mullet then he would like, but he still has the legs and strength to battle it out every night in front of the net.

Questioning the Winnipeg Jets

Hockey is back in Winnipeg with the Jets playing their first regular season game tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. It's been a long 15 years for Winnipeg, but they finally got an NHL hockey team back. Despite their excitement to have an NHL team back in the city, there are many questions that have to be asked about the team, here a few:
  • Will this female model do a re-shoot wearing the news Jets logo?

Nyjer Morgan, Former Hockey Player

Nyjer Morgan was very clutch tonight delivering the game winning hit for the Milwaukee Brewers in the 10th inning in Game 5 of the NCLS. He further made headlines by dropping a double "fuck yeah" in the post game interview. Obviously caught in the moment, these things happen - just ask Jonathan Toews. Morgan also made headlines last year when he charged the mound and started a bench clearing brawl - he was deemed crazy for charging a guy almost a foot taller than him. Where does this attitude and feistiness come from? Hockey of course. What many don't know is that Morgan actually played a few games in the Western Hockey League for the Regina Pats and may have been the first African American player to play in the WHL.

If You Are About To Make The NHL, Make Sure You Buy Your Family The NHL Centre Ice Package

I can remember watching a movie about Brian "Spinner" Spencer titled Gross Misconduct years ago that discussed his up and down career and his eventual tragic death. Brian Spencer was almost a point-per-game player in the WHL when he was drafted 55th overall in the 1969 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He spent most of his first season with the Maple Leafs farm club in Tulsa racking up 186 penalty minutes. The following season he played 50 games for the Maple Leafs and that is when tragedy struck.

Games We're Looking Forward To Watching This Season

As soon as the NHL schedule was released it didn't take long for people to circle notable games on their calendar, whether it was a rival coming to town or a can't miss matchup such as the Florida Panthers vs. New York Islanders. Well we like to think outside the box and will fill you in on some  of the more interesting dates on the NHL schedule you might have overlooked.  Here are the games we're looking forward to watch this NHL season:

Pump Up The Volume... NHL Hockey Is Back!

Skates are being sharpened, sticks are being taped, Dion Phaneuf is fiddling with the music, and the coaches are finalizing their lines. Yup, hockey's here. Not that preseason garbage where teams dress old veterans to circumvent the CBA, or All-Stars have to play with AHL 3rd liners - regular season hockey is here.

Wax Stain Rookie: Ron Francis

Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
This week’s return is number 2 all-time in assists with 1249 and 4th all-time in points with 1798. I am of course talking about Ron Francis. This guy is the definition of underrated. Being Canadian and being a centre meant that Ron had to live in the shadows of other centres like Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Sakic and Hawerchuk. As a result, Ron didn’t get his invites to Team Canada events as often as I believe he should have. Ron did win two Stanley Cups and quietly put together one of the most impressive Hall of Fame resumes in NHL history despite never playing in a Canada Cup.

Ryan Kesler Bares All For ESPN

As usual, I was searching for Ryan Kesler photos and came across this. This looks to be the reported nude Kesler photo from the upcoming ESPN body issue. The last time I saw NHL players posing nude was in 2009 and I still wake up in the middle of the night scared that Zdeno Chara is standing naked in my bedroom watching me sleep.

So while you are watching the NHL season kick off you can keep your girlfriend off your back by letting her take a nice long, hot bath with this magazine spread.

2011-2012 NHL Season Thoughts, Plots, and Long Shots

This is a guest post by Nick - Dirty Dangle's Ottawa Senators Devil's Advocate
Before every season there’s a fine line between chasing down every minuscule hockey rumour (90% of which surely arise from Eklund reading ludicrous trade proposals on HFBoards, HockeyBroads, and*) out of sheer boredom from the lack of goings-on around the league and the immense excitement as the upcoming season’s storylines begin to play out. Here are 11 things to pay attention to in the months to come:

Thank God Lakes Freeze Over

Hockey is just around the corner, and that means that winter is coming. With that said, we are thankful that lakes freeze over and turn into something only Ron MacLean can describe as a frozen shrine. For all those that shovel or plow the ponds and lakes that let some of the greatest shinny games never seen be played, this is for you.
