Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
Well the last post and this post are related in many ways even though the players are decades apart in age. Both were/are Right Wingers, both made the Hockey News top 20 at that position of all-time, and both signed their own “cards” rather than the one I sent.
Jarome Iginla is one of best power forwards Canada has produced in the last decade and arguably one of the best power forwards in the world in the last 10 years as well. His career accomplishments are certainly admirable which include a Rocket Richard trophy in '02 and '04 as well as an Art Ross trophy in '04. In addition, he would score 50 goals twice in his career along with an active streak of 10 straight seasons with 30 or more goals.
Jarome is a winner, having won a World Junior Championship in '96, a World Cup in '04, a World Championship in '97, and two Olympic Gold medals! The only thing missing from this resume is what he covets more than anything else, a Stanley Cup. He did get a shot at it in '04, but as time goes by he chances are getting slimmer and slimmer. Recently, there has been much talk about Jarome getting traded and players like Ray Bourque have even weighed in on what they think he should do. I believe that if he is going to have a legit shot he will need to say goodbye to a city that certainly has treated him well and is an action that is easier said than done.
Jarome's rookie card:
This is one of three rookies Jarome has. They all book in the $8-10 range with this one being the most valuable of the three. I don't own any of them, instead I have his “Young Gun” card which was actually produced a little later.
This autograph request was a little different than ones I have made in the past. I mailed two cards and two return envelopes. I have a good friend who is a Flames fan and one of his sons idolized Jarome Iginla. I asked Iggy to sign a card for myself as well as my buddies son. After about 7 months on the exact same day both of our autos arrived. Like I mentioned in the opening, they weren't on the cards I sent, but they are real autographs in the end which is all a fan can hope for!
The auto features a pretty nice signature done in black sharpie. The card is more like a pamphlet in size and is only printed on one side, the back side is blank. I think this was certainly worth the wait, and I hope if Iggy ever gets his Cup, it was worth the wait too!
I am still waiting for next week's auto to arrive in the mail so here is hoping it is a good one!
