What Would Be In A 2012 Maple Leafs Time Capsule?

The time capsule had more rust than Colton Orr
Last week Ryerson University and Loblaws, the new owners of Maple Leaf Gardens, opened up a Time Capsule that was buried in the hockey shrine back in 1931. Inside were some newspapers, a red ensign flag, a rule book, a Gardens stock prospectus, and a tiny ivory elephant. So basically nothing awesome.

Dan Girardi: Henrik Lundqvist's Bodyguard

Undrafted, Dan Girardi took the free-agent route to the NHL after winning the OHL Championship and Memorial Cup with the London Knights in 2005. Girardi signed with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL and began the season in the ECHL with the Charlotte Checkers. In early 2007, Girardi would get his chance to play for the Wolf Pack's NHL affiliate - the New York Rangers - and never look back. He's played in the show ever since and has only missed 2 games due to injury. That's impressive considering a major part of Girardi's game is blocking shots and hitting opponents.

Underground Attractions At The All-Star Game Fan Fair

One of the great things about the NHL All-Star Game is the Fan Fair that takes place. Full of interactive games and exhibits, it gives the fans a chance to participate and experience some of the fun surrounding the All-Star Game weekend. There are the typical events you'll find: test your accuracy with the Bridgestone Shootout, Create Your Own Hockey Trading Card presented by Upper Deck, and the always classic Bubble Hockey at the Molson Canadian Hockey House. However, if you find yourself bored with these same old interactive attractions, there are some fun underground events in the basement of the Ottawa Convention Centre.

Dirty Dangle 2012 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft Drinking Game!

It's that time of year again for the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft, and that means a Dirty Dangle Drinking Game is in order.

Who Will Be The NHL's Mr. Irrelevant In 2012?

Who is getting picked last? Arguably one of the most asked questions surrounding the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft. Last year there was plenty of talk surrounding David Backes, Paul Stastny and Phil Kessel as potential Mr. Irrelevant's, and unless you live under a rock, you know it ended up being Mr. Kessel, which made for cringe-worthy TV (no thanks to James Duthie).

This year, Kessel is back in the Draft, but among the top players this season so there is no way he's going last this year. Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara are captains this year and they will have some help with Henrik Lundqvist helping Alfredsson out for team Sweden and Joffrey Lupul who will be helping Chara pick while constantly living in fear while standing next to the big man.

Have The Maple Leafs Accomplished "The Drafting Goal"?

"Ottawa really wanted you so we did you a favour"
For Christmas I got a book call The Art of Scouting by Shane Malloy. The book talks about what scouts look for in a player, and how many hockey teams in the NHL have changed their ways of scouting over the years. It's been pretty interesting so far and one part really got me thinking about how my Toronto Maple Leafs have done the past 10 years.

Scary Hockey Skate Injuries Are The Worst

Taylor Hall is already giving Halloween costume ideas in January!
Earlier this week we saw Taylor Hall's face get stepped on... by a skate... with no helmet on. Talk about scary and you know that Oilers nation nearly loafed in their pants as their 2010 NHL Entry Draft 1st overall pick suffered a serious injury. Well, 30 stitches, a black eye, and a lump on his forehead later and Hall should be back playing soon enough. The injury could have been much worse as one inch lower and you're in eye territory.

Are The Toronto Maple Leafs Winter Classic Worthy?

So. Many. People.
As a Leaf fan, it's a stupid question. As an NHL fan, it's still a stupid question. Earlier this week, there was an article in the Vancouver Sun titled Leafs-Red Wings? This hardly qualifies as a 'Winter Classic' and listed a bunch of reasons of why the unofficially announced event that is a year away is going to suck. Either someone is upset the Vancouver Canucks aren't in the game, or they are just a big Debbie Downer.

Mike Green Is Killing Fantasy Teams Worldwide

Mike Green perfecting how to skate like Eric Lindros
So how many people out there drafted Mike Green thinking after a tough year in 2010-11 he would return to regular form and put up 70 points? Well you can toss my sorry ass on that list. I even drafted Mike Green the year before and was rewarded with his 24 points in 49 games. Solid numbers for most d-men in the league, but not what you would expect from one of the top offensive d-men the game has seen in a long time. So far this season Green has 6 points in only 10 games. Needless to say I was expecting a lot more out of my 2nd round pick as the guy who gambled on Sidney Crosby has gotten more out of Sid than Green.

Wax Stain Rookie: Jeremy Roenick

Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
Who are the best 5 American-born NHL players of all-time? Each person's list is likely different, but I am sure many will have some similarities. My list in no particular order is: Mike Modano, Chris Chelios, Pat Lafontaine, Brian Leetch and Jeremy Roenick. If I were to include goalies too, I would need to consider Frank Brimsek and Mike Richter.

Let's Complain About The All-Star Game Roster

I try and not let the All-Star Game get the better of my emotions as it is all meant to be in good fun and a celebration of hockey. I find it best to enter the entire weekend with low expectations and build from there and it usually makes for a pretty solid weekend of events for me. However, it appears as though many care deeply about the game as groans of complaints rolled out following the announcement of the All-Star Game rosters last week. Snubs, undeserving selections, fan voting - there will always be something to complain about when it comes to the All-Star Game roster. Here are some of the more common ones.

Alex Ovechkin Is A Russian Rapper

This video was recently brought to our attention and it is a beauty. Obviously we have no idea what the song is about, but we gather it has something to do with Russian athletes and Alex Ovechkin is an integral part of the music video. He bobs around for about 3 minutes with a few hand jives, and then shit gets real - Ovi raps.

Erik Karlsson Is Slick Like His Hair

Erik Karlsson really enjoys hearing his named called over the PA systems at arenas all over the league. The 21-year-old, all star defenceman of the Ottawa Senators has been scoring big goals and setting up teammates on a consistent basis which puts him atop all defencemen in scoring with 43 points in 44 games and a 10 point cushion on the next closest d-man, Brian Campbell.

How The NHL All-Star Game Roster Selections Went Down

With the Fan Ballot Stuffing complete, it's time to take a look at how the remaining All-Stars we're selected by Brendan Shanahan and Rob Blake in their own All-Star fantasy draft.
He says if we don't take Kessel and Lupul he's going to rent a barn.
Shanny: Ok, Rob, so we got Spezza, Michalek, Alfie, Karlsson, Phaneuf, and Thomas to start the game. *cracks up laughing*

Rob: Oh boy, so we have 21 forwards, 10 D and 5 goalies to pick, and then 12 rooks. First thing's first. I'll make the call *dials Sidney Crosby*

Shanny: And...?

Rob: Yeah he can't play, he thought I was his sister or something and started naming off deals at Sportchek.

Shanny: Oh sweet, any deals on shoulder pads?

Wax Stain Rookie: Johnny Bower

Wax Stain Wednesday is a regular feature on Dirty Dangle. Our pal Dave at Wax Stain Rookie is an avid autograph and card collector and has some amazing experiences to share with us. WARNING: these posts may make you want to buy a Beckett and get those dusty hockey cards out from under your bed that you hide from your girlfriend like a secret porn collection.
Well after a month of nothing, a couple of autographs have made their way back home to me in the first few weeks of 2012. The first one I am going to share with you is from a Toronto Maple Leaf great. Hard to imagine a player with more dedication, drive and desire than Johnny Bower. Johnny was 29 years of age at the end of his rookie season. Despite a decent first season, he was back in the minors that next year and would not remain at the NHL level continuously until he was 34 years old. However, what he accomplished from ages 34 – 45 would be absolutely remarkable.

Could The Penguins And Capitals Both Miss The Playoffs?

Tonight should have been a great game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals with some of the NHL's top stars facing off against each other in a must-watch game for the Eastern Conference lead. But the NHL just isn't the same these days, instead it will be a depleted Pens team facing a struggling Caps team for 8th place in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Sure it will still be a good game and it's hockey so I'll watch, but this rivalry is not as intriguing when you're not getting the best out of it.

Predicting The NHL In The Year 2020

Looking into a Jofa Helmet will show you the NHL's future
After a drunken night wandering around the city looking for street meat, I stumbled across "Anastasia the Psychic" under some neon lights. For only $20 bucks she would tell me everything I wanted to know about my future - who I might marry or how many kids I might have. I said forget about that crap, I want to know what the NHL will be like in the year 2020. This is what she came up with:

Talking Hockey On A Road Trip

I recently went on an East Coast road trip from Toronto to St. John’s on Dirty Dangle business. This trip involved traveling through five provinces and an all-night ferry, which included watching Canada lose to Russia while crossing the Gulf of St. Lawrence. I couldn’t imagine doing this road trip with a girlfriend because I would have run out of things to talk about before leaving the city. Luckily, I was with my buddy and for ninety percent of the trip we talked about hockey or as we say, “talked shop.” The other ten percent was about the horrible drivers in Qu├ębec, Nova Scotian “hotties,” and the Newfoundland blizzard that left us stranded in an all-night diner. Here are some of the games we play and topics we discussed on the road. (Note: Free Wi-Fi at McDonald’s is great for verifying those tough questions. For example, was Tim Kerr a four-time fifty goal scorer? Yes he was!)

Things You May Not Know About The 2012 World Juniors

The World Juniors are in their final stages, and there have been plenty of storylines throughout the tournament. Evgeni Kuznetsov's 9 point game. The USA bowing out after the preliminary round. Petr Mrazek's goalie celes. Overall, it's been a great tourney so far with some of the most exciting preliminary round games in recent memory. However there are some stories or facts you may have missed in all the drama. And with that, we present you with Things You May Not Know About The 2012 World Juniors:
